Conclusion
Critical studies offer many interpretations regarding the nature and meaning of art and uses a variety of lenses to disseminate these ideas within our contemporary discourse. Art can be viewed as political in nature with these critical lenses. It has economic and social components. And when all of these factors align, an artwork has the potential to become iconic.
For the artists discussed in this essay, I must return to the curator’s talk I attended where the discussion centered on the act of making a work, regardless of the outcome. I believe that this intention informs the creative practice of these three artists. Curiston, in crafting machines that allow us to measure the temperature of a colour or hear a snowflake, allows the viewer to see the esoteric idea within a complex pairing of found and made objects. Widmer, in observing the nuances of the everyday, pairs the complexities of the print with familiar objects that allow us to enter into a visual meditation. Feist, in her investigations of the pluralistic nature of identity, provides a visual journey that juxtaposes the cultural with the personal.
